SG | Kapelle der Verfolgten

2021 the world persecution index announced all time high rates of persecuted christians around the world. ‚Open Doors Deutschland e.V.‘ a german foundation declares more than 309 million christians suffering from extreme persecution and discrimination. ‚Kapelle der Verfolgten‘ is a memorial and reminder for victims of persecution. The small chapel is located at an unknown site in south africa inbetween the cities Johannesburg and Pretoria. On a shallow lake the additive walls define a prismatic volume of 16m length and height. The trinity of the chapel reflects the holy christian trinity of father, son and holy spirit. Its dissolved almost ruin-like appearance admonishes the fragility of religious freedom in a society. Two arms connect the open air chapel with the lakeside. On each end of the triangular floor plan different sized walls and floors emerge and define the prismatic volume. A bell tower houses the stairs to the gallery. Flexible chairs and altar make room for spiritual gatherings. A third layer covers the gallery and forms a niche for a statue of the virgin mary on the ground floor. The round window above abstracts the halo. A cross shaped cutout in the concrete top layer projects incoming sunlight on the gallery and the central water basin from which the prismatic altar emerges.
